About @ThomasSpurlin and His Cinema Musings

You've arrived at the official journal, archive, and collective brain waterfall of Thomas Spurlin, a film journalist based in Atlanta, Ga. On the web, Thomas has been writing for online publication DVDTalk.com for a few years now -- both in the home video and cinematic review departments -- as well as AVRev.com.

As a Georgia boy by nature, he's returned from a long hiatus in the cornfields of Indiana back to the core of Atlanta. In his spare time, he enjoys cooking, listening to fresh music, learning about different elements of oceanography, discovering new ways to mess with his dog’s mind, and dabbling in graphic design. A few of his roundabout pleasures in life include: Tasty energy beverages, inexpensive yet elegant furniture, bargain shopping, Dogfish Head beer, Junior Mints, Egyptian and Japanese language and culture, avoiding television, cropping posters and photographs for framing, solid video game stories, outlandish Halloween plans and pranks, Christmastime warmth, and overall holistic growth as each second ticks away.

From a film perspective, Thomas loves to have his mind challenged -- and almost despises it when films fail to test him in some way. Now, that doesn’t mean that he can’t have his soft spot for great slapstick comedies, which he certainly does. But he likes to know that there are films out there that don’t exist just to fill the sticky seats of a theater, which all have their place; he enjoys to over-think films a lot, getting lost in themes and ideas whether they’re intentional or not. This means that he loves psychologically-boggling features and defragmentation pieces. Thomas also loves it when he discovers an unsettling horror film with deeply personal values or humanizing qualities. He’s also a sucker for martial arts epics and films with engrossing scores.

Some of Thomas' more recognizable favorites in the world of cinema include: 3-Iron (Bin Jip), Amelie from Montmatre, Atonement, Before Sunrise, Chasing Amy, Chungking Express, Closer, The Dark Knight, Delicatessen, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Exterminating Angel, The Fountain, Ghostbusters, Ying Xiong (Hero), In the Mood for Love, Lost in Translation, Se Jie (Lust, Caution), Maltese Falcon, Memento, Miyazaki's Spirited Away, Mulholland Dr., Oldboy, Rashomon, Sunset Boulevard, Throne of Blood, and Whale Rider.
